Psychodynamic Psychotherapy for Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists (ref. M14)
This is a course for Child Psychiatrists who wish, as part of their specialist training, to further their knowledge and obtain skills in psychodynamic psychotherapy.
Who is this course for?
- Psychiatrists in salaried specialty (ST4-6) training posts, consultant child and adolescent psychiatrists or fee-paying clinical associates who may undertake their clinical work in the Tavistock Centre or another setting.
- A minimum of a core qualification in psychiatry and some experience with children, adolescents and their parents is required.
- Previous recognised experience will be accepted and will not need to be repeated.
Aims
- To expand and develop your theoretical and practical skills in order to provide psychodynamic individual treatment to children and adolescents.
- To provide an opportunity to study relevant psychoanalytical concepts and to link these with ways of working in different clinical settings.
- To provide child and adolescent psychiatrists with a qualification that leads to membership of the Tavistock Society of Psychotherapists.
Content/teaching components
- Infant or young child observation, 1 year (2nd optional year available). Includes observation itself, and seminar attendance.
- Weekly lectures and seminars in child development and psychoanalytic theory - 2 years.
- Two twice-weekly psychotherapy cases, at different developmental stages, supervised.
- Long-term psychotherapy with a parent, supervised.
- Other psychotherapeutic experiences, eg family/group therapy/organisational consultation, according to individual interests.
- 5,000-10,000 word theoretical/clinical paper.
- Personal therapy twice a week (not covered by course fees).
Assessment
- Competence is assessed by supervisors.
- Leads to eligibility for membership of the Tavistock Society of Psychotherapists, Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist Division.
Time commitment
Approximately three years, for around one day per week. The programme can be tailored to meet individual needs.
