This is a specialist option in adult work with severe and enduring mental illness and personality disorders. In recent times, the importance of clinical supervision has been recognised in an attempt to improve standards of care and encourage a culture of continuous learning. This course offers a model for thinking about clinical work and puts ‘reflective practice’ at the centre. This is an in-depth way of understanding and improving work in this very difficult area.

Who is this course for?

• Aimed at professionals who are interested in the psychological processes underpinning their work with the ability to study at graduate level.

• You will also have two years practice in your field.

• Unqualified staff who can demonstrate psychological mindedness together with evidence of previous study may be accepted.

Aims

• Provide an understanding of normal and abnormal human development and its relevance to work with patients.

• Develop an appreciation of the therapeutic use of self in clinical practice.

• Reflect on the importance of conscious and unconscious communications in the work place.

• Identify and understand individual and group processes that interfere with effective working.

• Develop skills to monitor self in relation to others in the workplace.

Assessment

Two 4000 word essays and one in-class presentation module.

Time commitment

Two terms (plus a further term for completion of written work).  One day per week.
