Who is this service for?

MedNet provides doctors and dentists who are working in the area covered by the London and KSS (Kent, Surrey and Sussex) Deaneries with practical advice about their career, emotional support should they need it, and if appropriate, access to brief or longer term psychotherapy. It operates on the basis of strict confidentiality.

Why choose this service

Many doctors find it difficult to admit to stress, emotional ill health, a substance misuse problems or that they need help.

MedNet is staffed by Consultant Psychiatrists in Psychotherapy, who have seen over 750 doctors face-to-face in the last ten years. Treatment interventions are tailored to the individual practitioner in the context of a supportive relationship.

What treatment is offered?

Any doctor making contact would be offered a series of consultations. This may be sufficient in itself to deal with the problem or a discussion will take place about what further action would be appropriate to help with the difficulties.

Recommendations will be tailored to the individual problems taking into account the wishes of the client. This might include a referral; subject to capacity, when low frequency psychodynamic psychotherapy might be offered by clinical staff of MedNet themselves.

The clinical work of MedNet at the Tavistock Clinic is undertaken by three Consultant Psychiatrists in Psychotherapy: Dr Antony Garelick (Associate Dean), Dr Matthias von der Tann and Dr Elizabeth Gibb. The clinical work of MedNet in south London at the Maudsley Hospital is led by Dr Julia Bland.

How to refer to this service?

This is a self referral service and any doctor making contact would be offered a series of consultations.

The service of MedNet is free of charge to the user. As MedNet is extensively audited, every user is expected to participate in this process by filling out some questionnaires at different times in the process.

Contact with MedNet is possible either in writing, by telephone or by email. Further information and enquiries:
