The article examines FDAC's problem-solving approach to difficult cases, in contrast to the traditional adversarial approach. For instance, the traditional system expects vulnerable parents to find their own detox placement, but the FDAC system involves a support structure to guide the parent to do this.

  • Guardian Unlimited: mothers who breastfeed beyond babyhood

    Louise Emanuel, consultant child psychologist and head of the under-fives service at the Tavistock Centre, spoke to Guardian journalist Emma Cook on the subject of mothers who continue to breastfeed beyond babyhood. Louise noted that long-term breastfeeding "isn't necessarily productive", and that a central aspect of parenting is to make sure that children feel confident and independent.
