The Portman Model

This one-year course offers a training experience for professionals working with patients and clients who show signs of delinquency and/or sexual perversion. It is aimed at professionals working with patients/clients who have committed offences of a violent or sexual nature, or with those in danger of committing such offences.

The course adopts the Portman Clinic perspective, which is informed by more than 70 years experience of working with people of all ages who present with these difficulties. Drawing upon contemporary ideas in psychoanalysis, group analysis and systemic thinking, the course presents a practice based approach to the problems presented by the acting out, disturbing and possibly dangerous patient.

Who this is for?

The course is aimed at those working in both public and private settings, where there is a need to understand delinquent, violent or sexually harmful behaviour in both adults and young people. It will be especially relevant to professionals working in the Forensic field including Nursing, Psychiatry, Social work, Psychology, Psychotherapy and Education.

Entry requirements

Participants should have a basic knowledge of psychoanalytic concepts. Psychodynamic thinking as applied to forensic work may be acquired through   previous experience of such courses as Introducing Psychoanalytic Ideas on Sexual Perversions, Delinquency and Violence (P1) and Working with Delinquency and Perversion: An application of psychoanalytic theory (P3) or the equivalent.

Personal therapy, whilst not required, would be desirable, to gain a deeper understanding of psychodynamic concepts.
