How we make decisions

When making decisions about the work we do here at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust, we try to involve as many stakeholders as possible. We often consult with our patients and their families, our staff, our members, and local residents. We also work in partnership with other organisations, from charities to other NHS providers.

As a foundation trust, we are accountable to our members. We do this by electing a Board of Governors from amongst our members to get involved in the work we do and represent the interests of our members.

We are also accountable to Parliament through Monitor, the independent watchdog of foundation trusts.

Board of Directors

The Board of Directors are responsible for the governance, planning, and management of our activities. The Board of Directors meets on a monthly basis and authorises all the key decisions. Many of our senior staff are practicing clinicians, including our Chief Executive, our Medical Director, and our Trust Director. This helps us to be a patient-focused organisation.

Board of Governors

The Board of Governors are responsible for representing the interests and views of our members and partner health organisations. They are also responsible for holding the Board of Directors to account for our performance.
