Who is this service for?
Our trauma service sees people over the age of 14 who remain troubled by a traumatic event or series of events or experiences, which took place recently or in the past. Examples might include being involved in a road traffic accident, suffering an assault or having something traumatic happen to someone close to you, such as the suicide of or violence towards a family member. Our service is also available to those suffering from multiple trauma, such as those experienced by refugees or asylum seekers.
Our staff have special expertise in the aftermath of trauma and are trained to help you.
What kinds of treatment can we offer you?
To begin with, you would usually be offered a consultation consisting of up to 6 sessions. Sessions usually last around one and a quarter hours each. In these sessions you will have the opportunity to talk about yourself and whatever aspects of your current and past experience you feel is relevant.
The consultation sessions will act as an assessment, so that we can then talk with you about what the best course of action would be. You may, for example, find that the consultation alone helps you to understand your experience and reaction to the trauma better, to the extent that you don't need any further help. Alternatively, you may find the consultation process a useful indicator that you need further consultation, and the clinician may continue to offer you sessions.
You may find that some form of regular treatment elsewhere in the Trust might be what you need instead, or you could be referred for more help elsewhere. We provide a range of talking therapies, so our approach is tailored to your individual needs. It will be part of the consultation to discuss with you the question of further help, if appropriate.
We can also arrange for an interpreter to be present if necessary
